Free

New year, new employment laws. Are you in the know about the latest employment regulations? If not, don’t fret. Join us for a briefing on what small employers need to comply with in 2025 as employment laws change.

Some of the topics we will cover

CA Minimum wage in increasing to $16.50/hour*
West Hollywood Minimum Wage (as of January 1, 2025) $19.65
*Note: some local cities and counties have separate minimum wage ordinances that change monthly around mid-year. Additionally, there are industry-specific requirements in the fast-food and healthcare industries.
Leave of absence:
Effective January 1, 2025, employers will no longer be able to require that an employee use accrued vacation hours prior to tapping into Paid Family Leave or state disability benefits through the state. Additionally, the wage replacement benefit rate is increasing to 70-90% of an employee’s qualified earnings (up from 60-70%).
Hiring
A new law will prohibit employers from listing a driver’s license as a preferred qualification for job candidates unless certain conditions are met. Employers cannot include a statement in a job advertisement, posting, application or other materials that an applicant must have a driver’s license, exceptions apply.
Postings & Notices
Employers must post an updated worker’s compensation notice informing employees of their right to seek legal counsel to advise on their rights under the law
Also, the crime victim’s poster will be updated to reflect the new governing agency of the law, the California Civil Rights Department (CCRD), previously, the Labor Commissioner’s Office handled these complaints. Last, the Labor Commissioner will update the Whistle Blower’s poster which employers should replace as soon as it is updated to be in compliance.
Independent Contractors
California has passed the Freelance Worker Protection Act which will require that employers set an agreement with freelancers for “Professional Services” that are worth more than $250. Specific criteria apply to the contract including a payment date of no later than 30 days from the date the services are rendered. Similarly, the City of Los Angeles has an existing ordinance that also requires an agreement if doing business with Freelancers. Understanding when they apply is critical.

And More…

There are several more employment laws and employer requirements going into effect. These are just some of the highlights. Join us on January 21st, 2025 for a thorough review of the latest employment laws going into effect in 2025 and how that will impact your small business.
